December 10 is International Human Rights Day. To mark the occasion, as well as to participate in the national week of actions against the Iraq War that has been called by the National Assembly to End the Iraq & Afghanistan Wars, students in Duluth held a walkout.
The walkout took place at mid-day. It began at 11:50am at the College of St. Scholastica, where a small, but hearty group of students gathered and marched down to the University of MN-Duluth. There they joined up with a large group of UMD students and several activists from the community.
All told about 75 people participated in the walkout from start to finish.
At UMD Students for Peace organized an indoor rally in the Kirby Lounge with several speakers who talked about the Human Rights Declaration, the Iraq war, and the need to get more people involved in social justice issues.
Special thanks to the UMD Students for Peace and CSS Amnesty International folks that organized the walkout. Thanks also to the Northland Anti-War Coalition, the Twin Ports Action Coalition and Socialist Action for endorsing and supporting the event. And most of all, thanks to all of the students who took off of classes to participate in the walkout!
